It was indeed a ‘Black Sunday’ for the indigenes and residents of Ozubulu, the headquarters of Ekwusigo LGA, of Anambra State, as unknown gunmen and women came calling on the community on Sunday May 9, 2021, leaving in their trail four dead bodies, three burnt vehicles and the office the town’s vigilante services razed.
The gunmen were said to be on the trail of the President General of Ozubulu Development Union (ODU), Ambassador Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Dike Udo Ozubulu, as he was on his way to a scheduled meeting with the members of the Ozubulu Vigilante Services (OVS).
The PG, was said to have noticed that a certain Sienna Bus seem to be on his trail, suddenly the Sienna overtook him, blocked the road, but before the occupants of the bus could open fire on him, he made a quick detour and narrowly escaped their bullets.
The men in black drove straight to the vigilante office, opened fire on everyone in their sight, in the process they killed two young men, hacked the Deputy Commander of the vigilante services down with an axe, as it was said that bullets could not penetrate his body.

Before leaving they set on fire the vigilante office, a Toyota Tacoma pickup belonging to the OVS and a shuttle bus parked by the road side.
Earlier in the morning of the same day, another set of gunmen were reported to have shot and killed another indigene of the town Chief Maduka Ijezie, in the premises of his brother’s filling station along Onitsha-Owerri express way, Ozubulu.
As at press time our reporter has not been able to confirm if the case of Chief Ijezie was a case of armed robbery or an assassination.
Our correspondent gathered that as the gunmen in Sienna were leaving the town, they set fire to a vehicle parked in front of the town’s police station but did not attack the station.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed the incident but said he had not been briefed on the number of casualties.
The PPRO said,” Yes, there was an attack on Ozubulu but not the police station but vigilante office by the hoodlums
“They came in Sienna vehicles, motorcycles and attacked the office of the vigilante. Security operatives have been deployed to the area and normalcy has been restored.”
