Nnewi Community In Anambra State has inaugurated a new and improved vigilante outfit as one of the measures to improve the security of lives and properties in the community.
Present today during the inauguration which took at the palace of Igwe Kenneth O. Orizu, were the traditional ruler of the community HRM. Igwe Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III, the Chairman, Anambra State Vigilante Supervisory Committee CP Ikechukwu Ayo Aduba (Rtd), The Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Vigilante, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka (Ogilisi Igbo), Chief Cletus Ibeto of Ibeto Groups, Chief Ajulu Uzodike, Sir Denis Ofordeme, Ngobros, Okosisi Nnewi, the TC Chairman Nnewi LGA and a host of other stakeholders from the community.
Concerned members of the community donated security equipment including vans for mobility, and also made arrangements for the welfare of the vigilante personnel. The Chairman Ibeto Group of Companies — Sir Cletus Ibeto, while handing over the security equipment to the newly trained vigilante personnel, urged them to make good use of the seven rugged security van procured from Innoson Motors (IVM).
He also charged the vigilante personnel not to intimidate or extort people, nor use the security vans to escort private individuals, noting that more empowerment awaits the rebranded AVG of the community if they perform well with all that has been provided for them already.
The SSA to Governor Willie Obiano on Vigilante, who doubles also as the Chairman, Anambra State Vigilante Supervisory Committee, commended sons and daughters of Nnewi who took it upon themselves to rebrand the vigilante service of the community.
He reiterated that by law, the Traditional Ruler stands in as the Chairman of the vigilante outfit, and that the President General (PG) of the community is the secretary. The Retired Police Commissioner noted that the AVG must work together with the Police, and that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) must be a part and parcel of the vigilante committee for effective security.
Speaking shortly after the inauguration, the SA to Governor Obiano on Vigilante — Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka (OGILISI IGBO) urged the newly inaugurated AVG personnel to be diligent and tactful in their operations and also charged all local governments that are yet to key in into the ongoing reformation of the vigilante to emulate Nnewi community and reform their AVG for a better and improved security system across the state.
OGILISI IGBO stated that communities like Azia in Ihiala Local Government, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government and Onitsha (North and South) had already floated a rebranded vigilante system, noting that all of these efforts are geared towards improving the security of Lives and Properties. He urged members of the community to work together with the AVG by providing useful information and reporting suspicious activities promptly.
He also gave the assurance that Anambra Vigilante Service, under the leadership of CP Ikechukwu Ayo Aduba (Rtd), will continue to make efforts towards contributing to the safety of lives and properties in Anambra State.
