Amid a rancour-free and credible exercise, the Lagos Branch of Ozubulu Development Union(ODU), yesterday elected new executive members to pilot its affairs in the next three years.
The election which was held at the Ozubulu Civic Centre, on 111 Road, Festac town, Lagos, was contested by eight members of the ODU for various positions.
The slots vied for included: Chairman, Vice Chairman, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Deputy Social Secretary and Chief Provost.
It was only the Chairmanship and the Financial Secretary slots that had two contestants each, the other six positions had their sole candidates returned unopposed, as there were no contenders.
The Chairmanship slot was won by Mr Egwu U.K Charles who polled 184 votes out of the total 283 votes cast, to defeat his opponent, Mr Udebuani Chukwunonso Josephat, who garnered 99 votes.
For the Financial Secretary position, Mr Nwachukwu Maduako polled 150 votes out of a total of 283 votes cast, to win Mr Egbuonu Titus who got a total of 131 votes.
Announcing the result before the ODU General Assembly, the 2021 ODU Lagos Electoral Committee chairman, Agbalanze Raphael Chukwuneke, thanked the Union for the confidence reposed in the committee, which, he said, to a large extend, led to a hitch free exercise.
He further lauded members of his electoral committee for giving him the necessary support to achieve the onerous task of conducting a credible polls.
The electoral body’s boss however, further canvassed that greater efforts be made to ensure more transparency and fairness in the process of selecting would- be candidates,.
He added that this could be achieved by instituting an appeal committee made up a few ODU’s credible members, where any disqualified and aggrieved aspirant can readily seek redress.
Speaking in the same vein, the President General of Ozubulu Development Union, Amb Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe, lauded the Lagos ODU 2021 Electoral Committee for conducting a hitch- free and credible polls.
He added that he had no doubts in his mind that given the pedigree of Agbalanza Chukwuneke-led committee, it would surely deliver a credible poll despite the initial acrimony, distrust and tension that trailed the selection process.
Uzokwe further disclosed that he was happy that after the initial palpable tension and fears over the election, it turned out a huge success devoid of violence or any form of disagreement.
He called on the new ODU leadership to hit the ground running by leveraging on the achievements of his predecessors, through initiating far-reaching programmes and projects for the betterment of Ozubulu, the Anambra State community.
The ODU President General also challenged the new Lagos ODU executive to expeditiously institute a scholarship scheme for Ozubulu indigent students, just as he canvassed for other welfare programmes, like paying the bills of ODU members who may suffer from life’s threatening ailments.
In the same vein, the outgoing Chairman of the ODU Lagos Branch, Barr. Anyaonu Chris, not only commended the electoral committee for a credible exercise, but also lauded the entire ODU members for their support during his tenure,
He further affirmed that the members’ loyalty and commitment led to the achievements his team recorded in its three year tenure.
He also charged the new executive to carry out its duties with a high sense of purpose, tolerance and team spirit, adding that the tasks ahead were enormous and needed all the patience and determination to lead them to the desired end.
The new ODU chairman, Mr Egwu U.K Charles after taking the oaths of office and allegiance with his executive, commended the ODU members for massively voting for him, just as hailed the electoral body for supervising a most credible and hitch- free polls.
He also commended his main opponent and other contestants for putting up a good fight, appealing that now that the election was over, all hands must be on deck to make his tenure a huge success.
Egwu also assured the mammoth crowd comprising ODU members, journalists and other well wishers, that he will work with the fear of God, respect for one another, and accommodate varied interests, to take the ODU to enviable heights.
He added that the confidence reposed on him by the overwhelming support he received before, during and after the election, was enough encouragement for him to work for the good of not only the ODU Lagos, but for the entire Ozubulu community.
