IGP orders probe into attack on Ortom

Ostensibly to unearth the circumstances surrounding the incident,  the  Inspector-General of Police, (IGP) M.A Adamu, has ordered full-scale investigations into Saturday’ s  reported attack on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State.

In a statement by the police spokesman, Frank Mba, the IGP who condemned the incident, has equally directed the Commissioner of Police (CP), Benue State Command to take adequate measures towards strengthening and improving security in the State, particularly around the governor.

Mba further disclosed that the IGP had also specifically directed the commissioner to carry out thorough  investigations into the incident and ensure the arrest and prosecution of persons indicted during investigations.

 Meanwhile, in order to ensure a speedy, thorough, and conclusive investigation into the matter, the IGP has ordered the immediate deployment of a team of specialized investigators from the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Abuja to Benue State to provide additional investigative support to the state Police Command.

 The police chief while appealing  for calm, assured the people of Benue State and the country at large that the Force will continue to do its best in improving the security situation in the country.

Mohammed  further reassured that the Force will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to advance the fight against violent crimes and other criminal activities across the country.

Ortom was on Saturday afternoon attacked by suspected herders who attempted to kill him.

He later recounted his horrific experience after surviving the  deadly attack.

The governor said he ran 1.5 kilometers to escape unhurt.

Also, the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike also  warned that the President Buhari- led  administration will be held responsible if Ortom is assassinated.

He stressed that if the Benue State governor is killed, the country could be plunged into another civil war.

“If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria. If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria, Wike warned

Briefing journalists at Makurdi after the incident, Ortom said he was inspecting his farm on Saturday when armed herders, dressed in black, opened fire on him and his security aides.

He said it took the swift response of his security aides to repel the attack, while he ran a long distance to escape unhurt.

“If not for my security men and God I would have been dead by now, I ran over 1.5 kilometers to escape while my security men repelled the herdsmen,” Ortom  said.

He claimed that the attack came few days after the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore held a meeting in Yola and singled him out as an obstacle and must be killed.

The governor vowed that the ranching law of the state will not be upturned for any reason, stressing that no intimidation could force his administration to reverse the order of Benue people against open grazing.

Ortom further stressed that he would petition President Muhammadu Buhari and security chiefs against Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, adding that allowing the group’s leaders to move freely with security personnel attached to them was not in the best interest of the nation.
