By Odira Nwachukwu

There was a division on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, July 15, 2021 as senators take sides over the adoption of electronic transmission of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission on election day.

The plenary session of the senate on Thursday got into a rowdy situation over the debate on electronic transmission of election results, forcing the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan to call for an executive session.

Upon their return from the closed door session, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, raised a point of Order citing order 73 of the Senate Standing Orders.

He called for division of Senate to enable Nigerians know who opposed or supported the proposed amendment by Senator Akpan.

After a lot of back and forth, Lawan agreed the Senate be divided to determine the provision of Section 52(3).

Lawmakers were, thereafter, called upon one after the order and asked to vote verbally.

Starting the poll was Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State who voted “NO” for electronic voting, saying there is no network in his village.

Next wasSenator Enyinnaya Abaribe and he voted ‘YES” for electronic voting.
