EXCLUSIVE Update on Ihiala attack: An eye witness report

By Mezie Akabudu, on Friday May 28, 2021, at about 7.45pm reported that a heavy shootout was going on between some group of unknown gunmen and the men of the Nigerian Army, at a military check point in front of Abbot Boys Secondary School Ihiala, in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Reports reaching our newsroom from an eye witness who wouldn’t want to be named said, “the unknown gunmen approached the military check point through the ‘Umunnamehi’ road, a road behind the Abbot boys and parked their cars far away from the school.

” They made their way through bush paths behind the school”.

According to the eye witness the gunmen who were in their numbers took the soldiers unaware as they were said to have taken out the soldiers who were resting in their rest bay before those at the check point had to respond swiftly on hearing sounds of the enemy gun shots.

The exchange of gun fire lasted for about 30 minutes or more. The report said that the exchange of gun fire was so intense that all the traders, shop owners, hawkers, drivers and passengers on the usual traffic occasioned by the military check point had to abandon their shops, wares and vehicles to scamper for safety.

The eye witness decried that by the time the gun battled died down the soldiers condoned off the area and would not allow both the vehicle owners, shop owners, and hawkers who abandoned there wares in the melee to approach the check point.

He said for this reason no one could ascertain the extent of casualties if any, on both the sides of the unknown gunmen and the Nigerian military.
