Demobilise anyone trying to attack you — Gov Umahi charges Police.

  By Henry Okoduwa.

Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi has charged policemen resident in the state to henceforth wake up to the reality of frequent attacks against them by criminals who have unleashed terror against them.

Upheavals occasioned by the dastardly murders of some policemen by unknown gunmen masquerading as herdsmen had heightened security concerns in the state in recent weeks.

Vexed that the police had been unresponsive to their cry for help during recent killings in their communities, there had been reprisal attacks that left some policemen dead.

Reports say that the anti-police frictions was more intense in the Effium and Magbo communities because of unfounded rumours that Fulani herdsmen were behind the attacks.

But rising from a state security meeting midweek, the governor gave police in the state express permission to demobilise anyone seen as threat to life as they try to discharge their statutory functions as keepers of law and order.

“I have directed them (the police) to demobilse anyone aiming to attack them as this contained in the police’s rule of engagement,” he said.

He also said that the vigilante groups would be strengthened to complement the police’s crime-fighting efforts.

In the broadcast, he had deflected attention from the ubiquitous herdsmen, saying they were not the masterminds behind the recent killings in the state.

“The natives should not blame security agencies who cannot be everywhere as we fully fund vigilante operations in the state,” he said.

“Individuals who make inciting statements on social media should desist because such increases tension in the land.

“The attacks are not perpetrated by herders but by criminals and bandits in the zone.

“How would we feel if the Federal Government withdraw policemen from the zone as a result of this development?” Umahi asked rhetorically.

He therefore charged the vigilantes and local government chairmen to ensure that they fully fortified to tackle the menace of open grazing when it indeed rears it’s ugly head in the state.
