the Chief of Army Staff, General Ibrahim Attahiru, wife and other military officers are rumoured dead in a military aircrash that occured on Friday evening of May 21, 2021.
Unconfirmed sources said that the presidency has already been briefed about the development.
In a statement, the Nigerian Air Force confirmed that there was an accident involving one of its aircraft in Kaduna but did not go into details.
“An air crash involving a @NigAirForce aircraft occurred this evening near the Kaduna International Airport. The immediate cause of the crash is still being ascertained”, the statement read.
Attahiru was appointed chief of army staff on January 26, 2021, succeeding Tukur Buratai. He was 54.
Born on August 10, 1966, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru hails from Kaduna North Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
He was a member of the Regular Course 35 of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Before his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff, he was the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu.
He was also a former Theatre Commander of the Operation Lafiya Dole
Recall that on February 21, 2021 a Boeing 350 plane belonging to the Nigerian Air Force crashed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja. The Nigerian Air Force NAF201 jet, a B350 aircraft, which departed Abuja at 1033UTC with six persons on board, including two crew, has crash landed at the Abuja Airport shortly after take off.
All six people on board are feared dead.
The aircraft was said to have reported engine failure at 1039 and crashed landed on the final approach path of Abuja Runway 22 at time 1048UTC.
Fire services are already at the scene of the accident.
