Anambra 2021: In Engr. Azubogu PDP Has A Diamond

By Tai Emeka Obasi

If there was any time a particular party had been very glaringly determined to take power, the present situation in Anambra State People’s Democratic Party, PDP aptly fits that moment.

It will be 16 solid years by March 17, 2022 that a state, predominantly PDP by honest party membership census, tasted power last in a state known by its uniqueness in every life endeavour. Yes, predominantly PDP…, but the state chapter of the party had failed in four consecutive attempts to wrestle power from the power-dominant All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

It started with the arrival of a very principled and unassuming personality, whose firm campaign promises to prove that the people were the cause instead of Anambra State itself being cursed, was rewarded with majority support in his entry into partisan politics and subsequently into governance.

His Excellency, Peter Obi came, saw and conquered! He came at a time the people earnestly wanted a clear departure from the Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju days – an era generally perceived as the worst by any governor in a PDP garb. The people spoke, but the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC was manipulated to temporarily deny their wishes. However, after 33 months of legally battling for his mandate, the Appeal Court eventually upturned that manipulation and restored the wishes of the people from the claws of Dr. Chris Ngige, who was the major beneficiary of that ‘hijack’.

In fairness to Ngige, he had taken a very positive departure from the pathetic governance style of his predecessor that he and the PDP believed it was just a matter of time and they’d be back. It proved wishful thinking as the bearded man from Alor in Idemili South Local Government Area never was able to return to power, despite all efforts to. Partly because the PDP never got its acts together again to fight from a united front and mainly because the man who stepped in re-wrote the performance history of governance in the state and nation, the people stuck to APGA.

They voted in 2010 to stick to Obi’s unique approach to every aspect of developmental leadership, repeated in 2013 to continue with it – all benefitting APGA. In 2017, more to the disunity in the PDP anchored on greed than the performance of APGA’s His Excellency, Willie Obiano, APGA held on to consistently stretch dominance to unprecedented 16 years.

Never mind the bogus media presentations, neither read much into the characteristically over-hyped cargo airport still under construction, the present Anambra State is more or less at same level of comparatively poor governance during the days of Mbadinuju, regarding what the people really need. Therefore, if the PDP are truly hungry for it as they have demonstrated in recent times, then it is now or never!

In their ranks are arguably eminently qualified men and women of quality jostling for that sole ticket to represent the party in the November 6 polls. However, this particular election will be a very tough one. The people we are talking about have tasted top quality people-oriented governance and tasted another anchored on mere propaganda and noise making. And very importantly, they now know the difference.

Hence, being just eminently qualified will not be enough; having enough to point at to indicate knowledge of statecraft will play a pivotal role.

In the ranks of this rare combination is a three-time member of the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, Engr. Chris Emeka Azubogu. The member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency has mastered the rudiments of quality delivery of dividends for all grades of people in this government of the people by the people for the people.

The University of Nigeria-trained engineer is a character straight out of the exalted book of EXCELLENCE with regards to people-oriented public service. Other than the characteristic envy great performers in office attract from the retrogressive-minded, no Nigerian privy to the mountain of projects attracted to his constituency and beyond would not marvel.

From attracting a multimillion dollar Nnewi Automotive Industrial Park to numerous road infrastructure, to enhancing quality education through all levels of empowerment and COVID-19 interventions, interventions in power, housing and recreational infrastructure like stadium, the man christened Mr. Project for obvious reasons, has touched lives within and beyond his constituency. And talking of lives, perhaps his most potent achievement is his annual medical outreaches, a project that will soon get to its 5th edition where about 30,000 people have benefitted in getting free medical services, ranging from simple eye correction lenses to the very complicated fibroid surgeries.

Counting Mr. Project’s achievements in 10 years cannot be achieved in one write-up, whatever the writing skills involved. However, why he has been able to outperform the promises he made to the people can be summarized.

First, he is everything about the most vital quality of any great leader – HUMILITY. He is also exceedingly SIMPLE, ACCESSIBLE and astonishingly a workaholic. Above all, his ability to recognize the problems of the society and his very prudent approach to proffering appropriate solutions’ rates him amongst the very best of political leaders in these times where frugal approach is the only hope of recovery from a COVID-19 pandemic-strangled world.

He is relatively young. He is pleasingly an ICT guru. He is impressively very focused. He is astonishingly very visionary. And he has unbelievable knowledge of statecraft. For an election pundits expect to be extremely tough, PDP could not be better placed with a Chris Emeka Azubogu as her candidate. He is pure Diamond!
